چکیده

The traditional method of sending a training signal to identify a channel, followed by data, may be viewed as a simple code for the unknown channel. Results in blind sequence detection suggest that performance similar to this traditional approach can be obtained without training. However, for short packets and/or time-recursive algorithms, signi cant error oors exist due to the existence of sequences that are indistinguishable without knowledge of the channel. In this paper, we reconsider training signal design in light of recent results in blind sequence detection. We design training codes which combine modulation and training. In order to design these codes, we nd an expression for the pairwise error probability of the joint maximum likelihood (JML) channel and sequence estimator. This expression motivates a pairwise distance for the JML receiver based on principal angles between the range spaces of data matrices. The general code design problem (generalized sphere packing) is formulated as the clique problem associated with an unweighted, undirected graph. We provide optimal and heuristic algorithms for this clique problem. For short packets, we demonstrate that signi cant improvements are possible by jointly considering the design of the training, modulation, and receiver processing.

EXIT Chart-based Design of LDPC Codes for Inter-Symbol Interference Channels

The subject of this paper is the design of lowdensity parity-check (LDPC) codes concatenated with a Gray mapped quaternary phase shift keying (QPSK) modulator for transmission over inter-symbol (ISI) channels. In particular, we will present several results considering important partial response channels (PRCs). Using an extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) chart-based analysis, we give insight...

Joint Successive Cancellation Decoding of Polar Codes over Intersymbol Interference Channels

Polar codes are a class of capacity-achieving codes for the binary-input discrete memoryless channels (B-DMCs). However, when applied in channels with intersymbol interference (ISI), the codes may perform poorly with BCJR equalization and conventional decoding methods. To deal with the ISI problem, in this paper a new joint successive cancellation (SC) decoding algorithm is proposed for polar c...

Finite-length extrinsic information transfer analysis and design of protograph low-density parity-check codes for ultra-high-density magnetic recording channels

The authors study the performance of protograph low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes over two-dimensional (2D) intersymbol interference (ISI) channels in this study. To begin with, the authors propose a modified version of finitelength (FL) extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) algorithm so as to facilitate the convergence analysis of protograph codes. Exploiting the FL-EXIT analyses, the auth...

Block precoding for MUI/ISI-resilient generalized multicarrier CDMA with multirate capabilities

Potential increase in capacity along with the need to provide multimedia services and cope with multiuser interference (MUI) and intersymbol interference (ISI) arising due to wireless multipath propagation, motivate well multirate wideband codedivision multiple-access (CDMA) systems. Unlike most existing continuous-time symbol-periodic and multipath-free studies, the present paper develops an a...

Low-Density Lattice Codes for Inter-Symbol Interference Channels

Low-density lattice codes (LDLC) designed for inter-symbol interference (ISI) channels are proposed in this paper, including the node-by-node belief propagation (BP) decoding algorithm and the construction of LDLC codes for ISI channels. A theorem is presented to illustrate that the nominal coding gain of LDLC codes can be increased by introducing ISI into the primary codes. Shaping operation m...

Spatially-Coupled Codes and Threshold Saturation on Intersymbol-Interference Channels

Recently, it has been observed that terminated low-density-parity-check (LDPC) convolutional codes (or spatially-coupled codes) appear to approach capacity universally across the class of binary memoryless channels. This is facilitated by the “threshold saturation” effect whereby the belief-propagation (BP) threshold of the spatially-coupled ensemble is boosted to the maximum a-posteriori (MAP)...
